Naturally, caring for ill and injured animals on a daily basis took an emotional toll on myself, and recently led me on a spiritual journey around the world.

This is where, in the tropical paradise of Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand, I discovered the healing powers of Reiki.

Having limited knowledge of any alternative therapies in the veterinary industry I did some research and found solid evidence that Reiki is particularly beneficial to animals and so, took the plunge to complete my Certificates i and ii with the dream to share the healing benefits back home.

Healing Quest: Reiki For Animals

Having a vast experience with animal care and behaviour throughout my career allows me comfort and ease when getting to know your pet, and during treatments - you can rest assured that your pets boundaries will be easily read and respected.

During my researching phase I also discovered information on the beautiful, soothing benefits that Reiki can bring to shelter and rescue animals. Always having been a "sucker for a stray" and often being assisted by some of the local rescues in Perth throughout my career, I found this particularly inspiring and will be offering my services within the rescue field. If you are a co-ordinator for a local rescue and have an animal in need, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Oh, and if you were wondering, I have one amazing dog and two naughty torties!

Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive, yet powerful alternative therapy of healing energy that works via intention. This may seem far-fetched to some, but wait! Before letting inclination sway you, there is a science behind it! Check out the following for some solid facts and information about recent studies:

https://www.elephantjournal.com/2016/02/how-reiki-works-the-science-bit/

http://www.collective-evolution.com/2016/03/11/how-reiki-actually-works-the-science-part/

Essentially, a Reiki treatment involves channelling energy through the practitioner and directly into the patient. It does not itself heal per-se, but directing and increasing energy within the cells and to areas of need enhances the natural healing abilities of the body, relieves stress, anxiety and promotes wellbeing.

Reiki treatments can be used safely in conjunction with traditional veterinary medicine, and should be used to compliment, rather than replace medicinal care. Reiki Australia state that "treatments are increasingly accepted in health and community care facilities including hospitals, hospices and cancer support units. For example, at the SolarisCare Cancer Support Centre at Sir Charles Gairdner hospital in Perth, Reiki is the most accessed complementary health treatment for cancer and leukaemia patients. Many patients report significant improvements in their level of pain, fatigue, nausea and breathing." (https://www.reikiaustralia.com.au/reiki)

Reiki is not for everyone, this extends to those with paws too. Reiki is always offered, not forced, so a treatment starts with an invitation to your pet. Of course a verbal invitation won't suffice when our furry friends cannot speak back, rather an unspoken greeting, with (hopefully) the acceptance of my presence and touch. Your pets comfort and personal space are paramount, not only when it comes to your; as the owner and care taker of the animals' piece of mind, but also to the effectual results, so we may decide to abandon or postpone the session at this point.

A session time will ultimately be determined when the patient says "I'm done", and leaves the vicinity. Animals are particularly receptive to energy intake - more-so than us humans, but generally a treatment will last 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Depending on the personality and our new-found bond, I may or may not place my hands gently on your pet. He or she will likely become quite relaxed and may even fall asleep during the therapy - this is completely fine and a sign the treatment is working.

And yes, of course you are more than welcome to stay in the room and observe the process!
